Preloop’s control plane turns a workflow submission or GitHub event into jobs, dispatches those jobs to registered runners, and records their results. Use this page to understand where each responsibility lives before configuring or operating a self-hosted deployment. Preloop system overview

The system in one screen

A run follows this path:
  1. A GitHub webhook, preloop run, or another native API caller submits a workflow.
  2. The workflow engine parses and expands the workflow, then the control backend records the run, jobs, dependency graph, and queue state.
  3. A matching runner session receives a job message and acquires the job through the broker.
  4. The runner executes steps inside its own microVM and sends logs, timeline updates, cache/artifact traffic, and completion data back through the protocol.
  5. The control plane settles the job, promotes dependent jobs, and projects the durable state to GitHub Checks.
